The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Board of Directors is hopeful that coronavirus conditions improve in time for the 62nd annual event. The tournament will take place as scheduled June 8th-13th, but has determined an alternative tournament week as July 5th-12th, 2020.
Their concern remains the health and safety of their staff, volunteers and participants and as a result, they will likely be modifying some of the social aspects of tournament week. Plans are being considered to provide more online access to the fishing competition and weigh-ins, and of course, shopping at the Big Rock store online is always available. The regularly scheduled April board meeting has been moved to the end of the month with the hope of a final decision to be made at that time.
Where the tournament got its name – The Big Rock – is actually not a rock at all – it’s a series of ledges, peaks, and plateaus that covers an area about 8-10 miles long by 1 mile in width. It’s a haven for small reef fish – the type of fish that attract the larger fish that blue marlin feast on, and a microcosm of the oceanic food chain just a short distance from the Morehead City waterfront.
Over the years, The Big Rock Tournament has raised and donated over $6 million to various charitable organizations, and hopefully this incredible tournament can continue for another intense year.
